Waitomo Caves

Huge natural caves with beautiful stone formations are the home of the luminescent glow worms unique to New Zealand. A tour guide will take you on a silent boat ride through the caves to view the incredible natural beauty lit by the gentle glow of the thousands of tiny creatures living there. Aranui cave is a dry cave where the natural geological formations are truly spectacular, get a close look at the colourful limestone stalagmites, stalactites and flowstones within its impressive chambers. For the more adventurous try a black-water rafting and climbing route to experience all that the caves have to offer.

Sanctuary Mountain, Maungatautari Scenic Reserve

A mainland ecological island of 3400 hectares surrounded by 47kms of predator proof fence (the world's longest) keeping ancient native forest, birds, reptiles, frogs and insects safe. Be enchanted by the antics of the North Island Kaka; a large forest parrot with a broad range of calls and sounds. This often-loud bird will surprise you with calls, shrieks and grating sounds while playfully hanging upside-down to feed on nectar.  Be sure also to book a tour of the tuatarium to see New Zealand's own living reptilian dinosaur; the Tuatara. Unchanged for 200 million years this creature is endemic to New Zealand.

 

Cambridge for antiques, arts, sporting venues and Thoroughbred horses

Just a 10 minute drive from Hamilton is the  town of Cambridge, boasting an amazing variety of things to see and do. Whether your interests lie in antiques, local art work, Thoroughbred horses, garden tours, deer farms, or outdoor pursuits and sporting venues, Cambridge has it all! Be sure to visit the Avantidrome indoor cycling track and training centre to experience the thrill of racing like an Olympic medalist in the purpose-built velodrome. The outdoor Gallagher Bike Skills park is a must for cyclists of all ages and abilities to test their skills and have some fun. The park is free to enter and enjoy, and is situated close to Revolve cafe for an energy boost in between riding circuits.

Rotorua, a geothermal and cultural hub

With incredible natural geothermal activity creating amazingly beautiful and alien-looking landscapes, and the rich culture and customs of the Maori people and their history in this area, you will not be lost for something to see in Rotorua. For the thrill seekers there is jet boat rides, Zorbing, and the Luge to name but a few. Visit Rainbow Springs to see and learn about New Zealand's national bird, the Kiwi, or for an even wilder experience go to Paradise Valley Springs where you can pat a Lion cub, feed deer, trout, sheep and pat opossums.
